Letter: Euro 2012: Don’t believe the Ukraine scare stories

June 2, 2012

It’s a personal choice whether to attend a sports event that happens once every four years, support your team and explore a fresh nation (Comment, 31 May). Those wise enough not to believe scare tales about South Africa loved their stay there two years ago. The same will happen this June in Ukraine and Poland, and my countrymen are looking forward to exhibit our openness and hospitality to the earth. Recent allegations about racial intolerance in Ukraine are scaremongering. Boycotting the Euros or Olympics would capture us back to the times of the cold war. The Tymoshenko condition is not an simple or simple one, however the judicial action is ongoing and it is unfair to constitute Ukraine’s European aspirations hostage to political developments. We are not perfect however nobody is. So instead of puzzling over finding ways to punish, it might be bigger to gaze for thoughts on how to aid.Volodymyr KhandogiyAmbassador of UkraineUkraineEuropeEuro 2012Yulia TymoshenkoEuropean footballguardian.co.uk © 2012 Twitter News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
